Yardie
The title “Yardie” is sheng (slang) for “my space”. The show features interviews and profiles of young people in Dandora – one profile per week, who have taken the initiative to fight unemployment by using their skills to create new legitimate businesses and earn revenue e.g. though refurbishing/decorating Matatus, forming performance troupes etc. Many are highly talented and use innate talent or acquired skills to be self-sufficient and to escape a life of crime. Their economic independence boosts their position in society and they serve as role models to the youth in their area. The interviews and profiles are heart moving and captivating, and sometimes humorous. They serve as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit
The show echoes the clarion call “Itʼs not your choice if youʼre born poor; but itʼs your choice if you die poor.
